Source of Participants
When choosing participants for your user experience study, you have the option to source and filter your participants in a few different ways. You may choose to utilize Userlytics’ global panel of more than 2 million participants, or you may choose to invite your own participants, or those from a third party panel.
The benefit of choosing from our global panel of participants is that we can streamline and refine participants down to the very last detail, making sure your participants match your target audience exactly. Need to test with snowboarders in Japan who speak English? Not a problem. Capetown, South Africa residents in charge of their utility bill with greater than 45 K Rand household income? We’ve done that. Middle School teachers in Singapore? We can do that too. And if for some reason, your target audience doesn’t exist within our pool of participants, Userlytics can embark on a custom recruitment project to find the perfect participants for your study.
The second option for onboarding participants for your study is to utilize your own participants, whether they are your customers, your employees or those of a third party panel or recruiter. If you use this option, you can create a specific landing page where you can customize your logo and text.
Number of Participants
After deciding where you want to source your participants, you must choose how many participants you want to participate in your study. According to the Nielsen Norman Group, testing with 5 participants is enough to cover the 85 of the usability issues of any asset. So, the best results come from testing with a few users and running as many small studies as you can afford. If you decide later that you would like to add more participants, you can do so at any time.
After choosing the source of your participants and the number of participants you want, it’s time to begin filtering your audience. Whether you decide to utilize Userlytics’ global panel or your own source of participants, it is important to filter your audience to ensure your participants match your target audience. If you choose to utilize our global panel, you will be able to narrow down participants with filters within the study builder. If you are utilizing your own participants or those or a third-party panel, you will still want to internally go through these filters to ensure your study reflects your brand as a whole. Listed below are the filters you can utilize to narrow down your study participants:
Country
You are able to filter participants based on the country they live in. Once choosing a country, you are given additional options to filter further based on states or regions within that country.
Age & Gender
Next, you will be asked to filter potential participants based on their age. You can choose a very tight age range, or a large age range depending on the type of customers your brand attracts. You will also be able to filter your participants based on their gender. Choose to conduct your UX study with only men, only women, or both men and women.
Advanced Demographic Filters
Lastly, you can leverage our study builder’s advanced demographic filters to narrow in even more on your target audience. Our advanced filters allow you to choose your target participants’ minimum education level, employment type, income level, family status, and whether or not they are active on specific social media platforms.
